Write Better Instagram Captions with the Caption ABCs
Actors…Time for a little #Truth:
-Captions can now help get your account discovered.
-Captions (when done correctly) can increase your engagement.
-And yet… most actors still stare at that little box of text and think: “What the heck do I say?”
If that’s you, you're not alone. That’s exactly why I created my Caption ABCs—a simple formula to help actors write better captions, faster.
🎭 Why Captions Matter for Actors
Your caption isn’t just where you say “New headshots!” and move on.
It’s where you:
Tell a story
Share a win
Connect with your audience
Build trust with the industry
And turn casual followers into engaged humans who root for you
And because Instagram now uses captions as part of its search engine, the words you use can help the right people find you (⬅️ Yes! Read that again. It’s pretty exciting!)
✍️ What is the Caption ABCs Formula:
This is my go-to caption formula—and it works for good ole photos, Reels, carousel posts, and more:
✅ A = Attention-Grabbing Hook
Your first line should stop the scroll. You’ve only got about 125 characters to get someone to tap “…more,” so make that line count.
Examples:
“I can’t believe I’m sharing this…”
“Ever walk out of an audition and immediately start overanalyzing every word you said?”
“Wanna know a secret?”
✅ B = Breathing Room
Nobody wants to read a giant wall of text. Use line breaks, emojis, and short paragraphs to make your caption easy on the eyes.
Think:
🎬 One thought per line
💭 White space is your friend
📌 Structure = scroll-stopping
And if you think you can’t add line breaks on your iPhone- watch this quick Instagram Reel here. It will be your BFF ⬇️
✅ C = Call to Action
Don’t post and ghost! Always tell your audience what to do next. The best way to add a call to action? Ask us a question! Because it instantly turns your post from a monologue into a scene!
Instead of:
“This outfit is adorable!”
Try:
“Isn’t this outfit adorable? I’m obsessed. What’s your go-to audition look?”
🗣 See how you just made it “We” instead of an ‘All about me’?
✅ S = Searchability
Instagram is a search engine now. Include keywords in your caption that help people find your post. Some options include:
🔍 What the post is about: “callback,” “voiceover tip,” “audition story”
🎭 Who it’s for: “actors,” “casting,” “voice actors,” “musical theatre”
#️⃣ Hashtags go in the caption—not the first comment (confirmed by IG’s CEO). They are also keywords that can help your post come up in search (and now the feed) for the right new followers.
✅ Let’s Practice Using the ABCs together:
Caption:
“Five years ago, I dreamed of moments like this. 🎭
Callback day. Nerves? Yup. Excitement? Off the charts.
I took a deep breath, walked in, and left it all in the room. These little wins matter — even when the outcome’s unknown.
💬 What’s something you’re proud of this week? Big or small. Let’s cheer each other on.
#actorlife #auditiongrind #callbackday #actorssupportingactors #auditioning
It checks all the ABCs boxes:
✅ A = “Five years ago, I dreamed of moments like this.”
✅ B = Line breaks + structure
✅ C = “What’s something you’re proud of this week?”
✅ S = Acting keywords + hashtags
